The Balance You Forgot You Had: Gift Card Tracking in Finances

There's a number most people can't tell you: how much money they're holding in gift cards right now. A card from a birthday, a partial balance from a return, store credit from a refund you took instead of cash. It adds up — and a surprising amount of it gets thrown away unspent every year, either forgotten in a drawer or expired before anyone got to it.

Finances now has a fifth tab built to fix exactly that: Cards.

Two numbers per card

Each gift card tracks what it started with and what's currently left. A spend bar fills in to show how much you've used at a glance, and the tab adds every card up into a single total available figure at the top — the real amount of store credit you have to spend.

That total is the number nobody usually knows. Now it's the first thing you see.

Spend it down

As you use a card, edit it and lower the current balance to match what's left. The spend bar advances, the total updates, and your ledger stays honest. No more "I think there's maybe twenty bucks on this" at the register.

Before it expires

If a card has an expiration date, add it — that's where the real value of this feature lives. Cards approaching their date get flagged expiring soon, and cards past it are marked expired. So instead of discovering a dead card at checkout, you get a heads-up while the balance is still spendable.

A gift card you forget about is just money you threw away. This is a small tab with a simple job: make sure you don't.

Add the one in your wallet

Open Finances, go to Cards, and add the gift card you're holding right now — the one you'd otherwise forget. Put in the expiration date if it has one. That's the whole setup.
