Adding Cities & Visits
This page covers how to pin a new city, record visits to it, tag the people you were with, and connect the memories that happened there.
Adding a city
Tap the New City button (or the + on mobile) from the Cities page.
Start typing the city's name — CairnHolm searches a global place database as you type and shows up to five matches. Pick the right one and it auto-fills:
- Region / state
- Country and country code
- Latitude and longitude
- Continent
These land in an "Auto-filled location details" group and stay fully editable, so you can correct anything or fill them in by hand if your place isn't found. The coordinates are what place the city on the Atlas map, so it's worth getting them roughly right.
Other fields:
- Poster — a cover image; upload a file or paste a URL
- Content — a full markdown editor for what this place means to you
- Published — makes the city visible on your public profile
- Featured — spotlights it on your homepage
Recording a visit
A city holds one or more visits — each a distinct trip. From a city's detail page, record a visit with:
- Visit date — when you were there
- People — select everyone who came along from your People directory
- Linked vacation — optionally connect the visit to a trip in Vacations
Add a new visit each time you return. Every visit is listed separately on the city page, newest first.
Connecting memories to a visit
Each visit has a "what happened here" section where you can attach related items from the rest of your archive — events, restaurants, parks, media, and more that took place in this city.
- Pin an item to highlight it on the visit.
- Remove an item (the × button) to take it off the visit, or unpin it.
This is what turns a pin on a map into a story: the restaurant you loved, the concert you saw, the park you hiked, all gathered under the trip where they happened.
Editing and deleting
Open any city and tap edit to change any field, including the location details.
Individual visits can be deleted from the city detail page using the trash button on the visit card (you'll be asked to confirm). Deleting a single visit leaves the city and its other visits intact. Deleting the city removes the entry and all of its visits.
Tips
- Trust the autocomplete. Picking a suggestion is faster and more accurate than typing coordinates, and it sets the continent for you so the Atlas region chips work correctly.
- One city, many visits. Don't create a second "Paris" for a return trip — add a new visit to the existing Paris so your map stays clean and your history stacks up in one place.
- Tag your companions. People you add to a visit will see the city in their Shared History on their People profile.
- Link the vacation. If a city was part of a bigger trip, connecting it to a Vacation ties the whole journey together.
