Planning a Trip

This page covers how to create a vacation, build out the itinerary and bookings, manage your budget, and tag who's coming with you.

Creating a vacation

Tap the + button from the Vacations page.

Required:

  • Title — the name of the trip
  • Destination — where you're going
  • Start date and end date

Optional at creation (editable later):

  • Type — Beach, Ski, Road Trip, City, Cultural, Camping, etc.
  • Status — Planning, Booked, In Progress, Completed, or Cancelled
  • Description — a brief note about the trip
  • Cover photo — upload a file or paste a URL; used as the hero background throughout
  • Tags — for filtering and browsing
  • Rating — 1–10; typically added after the trip is done
  • Budget — planned total spend, currency, and actual spend once you're back

The vacation lifecycle

Status reflects where the trip is in its lifecycle:

StatusWhen to use it
PlanningYou're still building the itinerary
BookedFlights, hotels, and key bookings are confirmed
In ProgressYou're currently on the trip
CompletedYou're back; the trip is done
CancelledThe trip didn't happen

The view on the vacation detail page adapts based on status. Planning and Booked show the itinerary and booking management panels. Completed shifts to a narrative and gallery view.

Building the itinerary

The itinerary section creates one entry per day of the trip. Each day has:

  • Title — what you're calling this day ("Travel Day," "Rome," "Day at the Beach")
  • Location — where you'll be
  • Activities — a list of what you're doing
  • Notes — anything extra
  • Photo — a single image for the day
  • Budget — planned and actual spend for the day

Days are auto-numbered and dated based on your trip's start date. Add, edit, or delete days as your plans evolve.

Adding bookings

Bookings track your reservations. For each booking you can record:

  • Type — Flight, Hotel, Activity, Car Rental, Restaurant, Train, or Other
  • Title — what the booking is for
  • Date, start time, end time
  • Confirmation number
  • Provider — airline, hotel chain, etc.
  • Location
  • Cost
  • Booking URL
  • Status — Pending, Confirmed, or Cancelled
  • Notes

Bookings are grouped by type on the detail page, so all your flights are together, hotels together, and so on.

Budget tracking

Set a planned total budget when creating the vacation, then track actual spend as you go. You can break spending down to the day level in the itinerary — each day has its own planned and actual fields. The budget panel shows:

  • Planned total vs. actual total
  • Cost per day (actual spend ÷ days)
  • Currency (selectable)

Tagging people

In the People section of the vacation detail, add anyone who traveled with you. Select from your People directory and assign a relationship type (Family, Friends, Work, Other). They'll appear in the trip's people list and the vacation will show in their shared history on their People profile.

Notifications

Individual itinerary days and bookings support notification settings — configure reminders for the night before, the day of, or a custom time. Useful for early flights or confirmed reservations that need your attention.
